The Greater Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists will hold its annual awards banquet and Hall of Fame inductions Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 at The Phoenix in Cincinnati.
 
We will announce the winners of our annual journalism awards, including the Gerald White Memorial Prize and the Camilla Warrick Award for Community Service. Click here for information about last year’s winners.
 
We will also pay tribute to The Cincinnati Post/The Kentucky Post, which ceased publication December 31, 2007 after 126 years.
 
WCPO-TV News Anchor Kathrine Nero will emcee the banquet. Our keynote speaker is William R. Burleigh, chairman of the E.W. Scripps Co. board of directors.
 
We will induct three celebrated journalists into the Cincinnati SPJ Hall of Fame
 
-J. Dennis Doherty, former reporter for The Cincinnati Post and Times-Star and former reporter and editor for The Cincinnati Enquirer. His accomplishments include helping produce The Enquirer’s first comprehensive stylebook and its first news pagination system.
 
-The late James H. Myers, reporter and editor at The Cincinnati Enquirer, the Western Star and the Dayton Daily News whom colleagues recall as “the consummate newsman.”
 
-Jerry Nardiello, sports editor and columnist at The Middletown Journal. The semi-retired sports columnist will celebrate his 61st year with the newspaper in August. Colleagues know him as “a walking encyclopedia of facts, statistics, context and place.”
 
The banquet begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the awards presentations at 7:30 p.m., both at The Phoenix, 812 Race St., Cincinnati. The cost is $40 per person. The event will include a cash bar and a silent auction to benefit the Cincy SPJ Scholarship Fund for journalism students.
