Queen City Scholar
The 1996 winner of the Cincinnati Professional Chapter Scholarship is Michelle Levy of Ohio State University. The $1,000 scholarship for the 1996-1997 school year was open to juniors and seniors from Greater Cincinnati planning a journalism career and who are actively involved in some journalistic pursuit.
Michelle, who lives in Loveland, has been part of the news ever since she was born as one of quintuplets -- a news event covered by the local media.
While growing up, her family discussed world news around the dinner table and that led her to recognizing journalism is very important in influencing public opinion.
She sees her role as a journalist as one of an educator to help people understand events in their world. As a journalist, she wants to give something back to society.
Michelle is a junior at Ohio State University studying broadcast journalism and communications. She also hopes to get a law degree.
She plans a career in television broadcasting and is currently a news assistant at WCBE, a National Public Radio station. She also has been published in Visions, a Jewish Student publication at Ohio State University and the Ohio Jewish Chronicle in Columbus.
Michelle is the third recipient of a $1,000 by the Cincinnati chapter of SPJ. The money for the scholarship was raised through celebrity roasts held several years ago.
