SPJ Cincinnati

Tuesday, January 22 - 7 p.m.

Jason Reece, a senior researcher at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at The Ohio State University, will discuss how racial and social disparities appear to isolate certain groups, but in actuality, harm entire cities/regions, and how journalists can better tackle these issues for comprehensive coverage in their media outlets.

The program will take place on Tuesday, January 22 at WCPO Channel 9, 1720 Gilbert Ave. Start time: 7 pm. A few of the items he'll highlight:

**How underperforming school districts affect all aspects of life and where Cincinnati stands compared to other large urban school districts in the state.

**Housing figures/analysis for Cincinnati as it relates to fair housing policies

**Applying the "miner's canary" theory to journalism (using race as an indicator of large issues/problems that need to be addressed before they begin to affect everyone. Example: predatory lending practices.)

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with Jason.

This program is sponsored by the Greater Cincinnati Society of Professional Journalists. To RSVP, please email GC SPJ board member Aiesha D. Little at aiesha_little@yahoo.com by January 20.
