We'll have the brown bag packed, ready and waiting for you - no need to bring lunch. And the best part? It's totally free. All of it.

State SPJ Banquet to be hosted in Cincinnati
September 17th event at Newport Aquarium, Scripps’ Rich Boehne keynote

It’s Cincinnati’s turn to host the Ohio SPJ Awards dinner — and we’re doing it up in style.

The weekend will also be Cincinnati’s “Fusion Weekend”. That means there will be Oktoberfest, a home Reds Game and a home Bengals Game — all happening right in downtown Cincinnati. That means it’ll be a great time to visit the Queen City, and maybe even stay a night.

Speaking of rooms, if you need a room to stay in for the weekend, SPJ has worked out a special$129 a night rate at the Cincinnati Hilton Netherland Plaza, 35 W. 5th St. The historic hotel is located inside the Carew Tower — Cincinnati’s tallest building — right in the heart of the city, only a half-block away from Fountain Square.

WHEN:

6:30 p.m. Saturday, September 17, 2005

WHERE:

Newport Aquarium, Newport, Ky., Newport on the Levee

COST:

$70/person

SPJ Board extends Hall of Fame nominations
Banquet delay gives SPJ more time to publicize Hall of Fame selection process

SPJ has changed the way journalists are entered into the Cincinnati Journalism Hall of Fame. Now, current, former and retired media professionals can nominate journalists and journalism educators - living or dead - to join the elite list of honored journalists. Nominations can be made at the SPJ Web site or by mail by downloading a nomination form.

Changing the process will open nominations to more journalists the committee may have overlooked in the past and needs to recognize, said Joe Wessels, SPJ's chapter president. The deadline is now September 15, 2005.

"The old process was good, but opening the nominations to a broader base will undoubtedly benefit the Hall of Fame," Wessels said. "The wealth of knowledge and memories of journalists not on the Hall of Fame committee needs to be utilized."

The Hall of Fame committee - comprised of current and esteemed retired journalists and through the leadership of Hall of Fame Chairperson Scott Aiken - selects honorees from those nominated. Typically two to three journalists are entered into the Hall of Fame each year.

For more information about how to nominate someone or to see the criteria for someone to enter the Hall of Fame, visit this site.
