Mixing It Up: Convergence in the Newsroom
Tour WCPO’s new facility

Ever wonder what it's like to work for other guys? Maybe you're that print journalist who always had an interest in television reporting but never tried. Maybe the thought scares you to death. Either way, reporters from all media are getting a shot at it more and more whether they want to or not. Partnerships between broadcast, web and print outlets are popping up in markets around the country.

Cincinnati is no different. James Pilcher, the Cincinnati Enquirer's transportation beat reporter, and Deb Silverman, WCPO's suburban reporter who works in the Enquirer's suburban bureau, know the changes well. And now they're ready to answer questions for media in Cincinnati - some who might wonder if they're next.

Also, WCPO's new facility will be open after the brown-bag event for a tour. WCPO has been in their new facility a little more than a month.

NPR’s Bob Edwards in Cincinnati

Bob Edwards signs and discusses his new book “Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism” at 1 p.m. Saturday at Joseph Beth Booksellers in Norwood.

Longtime broadcaster on National Public Radio's Morning Edition, Bob Edwards presents a popular history of how the creation of broadcast journalism - and specifically Edward R. Murrow's live broadcasts from the streets and rooftops of London during the Battle of Britain - changed the way news was reported. He examines the way this form of journalism and Murrow's contribution to it shaped the ways in which people in their homes saw war and other breaking events and how the high journalistic standard set by Murrow has evolved over time.

Event tickets are required and are available with the purchase of Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism. Joseph Beth is at 2692 Madison Road. Or call (513) 396-8960.

OnPress being mailed to all Cincinnati journalists

OnPress, the chapter’s monthly print newsletter, will begin being mailed to all local journalists for one year. Be looking for your copy of the June edition, complete with all contest winners and a message from new president Joe Wessels, out to mailboxes this week. The July issue isn’t far off. Though the newsletter is generally reserved for members, the SPJ Board decided to mail this to all Cincinnati and Dayton area journalists. The board made the move to bring more journalists into the SPJ fold. If you do not start receiving your free subscription, please send an e-mail to onpress@cincyspj.org.

SPJ Board Meeting Friday

The Cincinnati Pro Chapter monthly board meeting will be at noon Friday in the CityBeat offices, 811 Race Street, 5th floor.

Who gets to be on the SPJ Board? Good question. You can, for starters. Though in the past the process has been a more selective process, currently SPJ is looking to build and broaden our horizons. It’s time to bring SPJ back to the forefront in Cincinnati. If you’d like to join the board and help make a difference in the Cincinnati journalism community, stop by Friday. E-mail president@cincyspj.org if you would like an agenda e-mailed to you. To see current board members, click here: http://www.cincyspj.org/board.html.

Got an idea?

Journalists in Cincinnati haven’t had a voice to communicate with one another for years. SPJ is about to change that. And you can help. If you have an idea for an article for our weekly online newsletter or want to write a longer article for our print newsletter – or write for our web site, it’s easy. Or if you have an announcement or just some thing to say, plus SPJ is always looking for program ideas, send an e-mail to onpress@cincyspj.org.
