SPJ Board revamps Hall of Fame nomination process
New selection process underway, deadline June 24

SPJ has changed the way journalists are entered into the Cincinnati Journalism Hall of Fame. Now, current, former and retired media professionals can nominate journalists and journalism educators - living or dead - to join the elite list of honored journalists. Nominations can be made at the SPJ Web site or by mail by downloading a nomination form.

Changing the process will open nominations to more journalists the committee may have overlooked in the past and needs to recognize, said Joe Wessels, SPJ's chapter president.

"The old process was good, but opening the nominations to a broader base will undoubtedly benefit the Hall of Fame," Wessels said. "The wealth of knowledge and memories of journalists not on the Hall of Fame committee needs to be utilized."

The Hall of Fame committee - comprised of current and esteemed retired journalists and through the leadership of Hall of Fame Chairperson Scott Aiken - selects honorees from those nominated. Typically two to three journalists are entered into the Hall of Fame each year.

For more information about how to nominate someone or to see the criteria for someone to enter the Hall of Fame, visit this site.

McKibben revives OnPress
SPJ newsletter will be mailed in early June

Community Recorder reporter Paul McKibben has taken the reigns of SPJ's monthly newsletter OnPress and is coordinating its first issue, set for publication in early June. OnPress has been on hiatus for nearly a year while a new editor was found.

McKibben plans to bring innovative ideas to the popular newsletter. He has already begun work to bring new features - like a "shout out" section where local journalists can contribute a variety of personal and professional announcements, among other new features. In addition, he plans to write a monthly column and continue popular past features like "Comings & Goings" and the local journalism calendar.

McKibben most recently worked for the Chronicle-Tribune in Marion, Ind. where he covered City Hall and county government for almost 3 1/2 years.

A native Cincinnatian and West-sider, McKibben graduated from Oak Hills High School and  the University of Cincinnati. He is a former editor, columnist and reporter for the University of Cincinnati's student newspaper, The News Record.

Now back in Cincinnati for nearly two months, he's covering Boone County for The Community Recorder in Florence and lives in Delhi Township.

OnPress is the official publication of the Cincinnati SPJ chapter. It is sent free to nearly 1,000 journalists in the Greater Cincinnati and Dayton region.

A June 1 deadline has been set for the first issue. If you have a "Coming" and/or a "Going", a general announcement for the "shout out" section or other item you'd like included - or you want to verify you are on our mailing list - send an e-mail to newsletter@cincyspj.org. Look for the first issue in the mail in early June.
