The winners of the annual Ohio Society of Professional Journalists Awards competition:
More than 440 journalists entered this year's awards competition, which honors journalists in Ohio and in neighboring states who best served the public interest in 1996, in a variety of categories. The contest is jointly sponsored by the Cleveland and Cincinnati SPJ chapters. Independent judging was conducted this year by dozens of journalists in the Denver SPJ chapter and the Colorado Press Club.
While there are many contests that honor writing and wordmanship, this is the only Ohio competition that also awards prizes to those journalists who fulfill what is at the heart of the SPJ mission: Defense of the First Amendment, resistance against censorship, advocacy of open access to public records and meetings, media self-criticism and service by journalists to the less fortunate in their community.
This year, the Awards of Excellence competition also honored those who excel in the technological aspects: Database journalism, computer-assisted reporting, newspaper Web sites and more.
Winners were honored Saturday, September 20, at an awards luncheon at the Terrace Club at Jacobs Field.
